FRENECTOMIES

A frenectomy reduces a tight frenum, a small tissue fold connecting parts of the body. In the mouth, the lingual frenum connects the tongue to the mouth floor, while the labial frenum links the lips to the gums.

What is a Frenectomy and Why is it Important?

A frenectomy is a quick procedure to release a tight tongue or lip tie, often taking just a few minutes. It is needed when a frenum is too short, thick, or tight, causing issues with speech, eating, or oral hygiene. In infants, a tight tongue tie can interfere with breastfeeding, while in older children and adults, it may cause speech problems. Frenectomies are also done during orthodontic treatment to close gaps or help teeth move into position.

Frenectomies provide benefits for all ages. In infants, they can improve breastfeeding by helping with better latching, leading to better nutrition and growth. For older children, frenectomies can enhance speech, boosting confidence and relationships. They can also improve the appearance of the mouth, especially when combined with orthodontic treatment.
